Last week, Debrecen actor Sándor Csikos received the title of the Actor of the Nation, replacing Miklós Benedek, who died in January.

Csikos gave an interview to InfoRádio the other day, in which he said:

“I did not expect that after the Kossuth award, which was already incredibly well received, there is even higher” – reports InfoStart. “One does not work to receive awards. I have been here as an actor in Debrecen for some forty years, and it is a special pleasure for me, a great recognition, that an actor who does not work in the capital receives such a big award. Apart from me, there is only Levente Király from Szeged who received this recognition as an actor from the countryside” – explained Csikos, who believes that the recognition he received is also recognition of rural acting.

As he said, he has worked a lot in recent decades, but not only as an actor. For thirty years, he taught high school students in the drama department of Any Endre Grammar School, was a director, director, and also worked as a speech teacher, and he is currently teaching university students.

When asked where his strength and motivation came from, he replied: “I didn’t drink my brains out and I didn’t smoke away my voice. I’m sure it’s partly there, partly it could be my genes, that I’m here now, having avoided all the major problems of my age, and I’m healthy, I haven’t gone crazy. The other is that talent is fueled by two things: confidence and success. So when I came to Debrecen, I received trust from this theater, the Csokonai Nemzeti Theatre, József Ruszt, Péter Léner, György Lengyel, and I wanted to live up to this trust. Thank God I managed to do so.”

As for teaching, the Nation’s Actor says that he was able to do it for 30 years because he saw that the students believed him. “If they didn’t believe me, if I had told them a lie, lied about myself or about the material, then at that moment the children – thank God – are quite cruel, they would notice immediately, but there was no such thing. For 30 years, so they speak very fondly of me and thank us for our work with Ilona Várhalmi”, he added.
